Former Second-Overall Pick in MLS SuperDraft to Join Orange County SC

Southern California born midfielder with significant MLS experience joins Orange County SC on loan from LAFC

IRVINE, Calif. (March 22, 2017) – Orange County Soccer Club is delighted to announce the signing of veteran midfielder Carlos Alvarez.

Alvarez, 26, grew up in Los Angeles and played for Bishop Mora Salesian High School, where he was invited to play for both the United States and Mexico U-20 squads. He continued on to the University of Connecticut, where he had the third-highest career assists in school history with 42. He was also named the Big East Midfielder of the Year and helped UConn reach the NCAA Tournament three times..

After his career with the Huskies, Alvarez was selected second overall in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft by Chivas USA. During his MLS tenure he played for both Chivas USA and the Colorado Rapids, before signing with the USL’s San Antonio FC in 2016. He recorded 30 appearances with the club, scoring four goals and ranking third in the USL for regular season assists with seven.

Alvarez will be playing on loan from Los Angeles Football Club, who are set to debut in MLS for the 2018 season.

According to Orange County SC General Manager and Executive VP of Soccer Operations Oliver Wyss, the partnership between LAFC and Orange County SC will include close collaboration between the clubs on a variety of projects including player development and business operations.

"We are delighted to add Carlos to our team as part of our partnership with LAFC," Wyss said. "Carlos’ vast experience in MLS and USL will elevate our already talented roster and we are excited for him to showcase his incredible talent to our fans in Orange County and Los Angeles."

LAFC General Manager and Executive VP of Soccer Operations John Thorrington said team officials are thrilled to have Alvarez playing for Orange County SC this season.

“Carlos grew up here in Los Angeles, and we are excited to welcome him to OCSC as we know his development is in great hands with their leadership and coaching staff," he said. "We are confident that Carlos will not only be a great addition for OC on the field through his play but also will provide valuable leadership to the younger players we hope to sign in the near future.”

To see Orange County SC's new star in action, tune in to the team's first match at Reno 1868 FC this Saturday at 7 p.m. The team will be hosting an official watch party at the Auld Dubliner pub, at 2497 Park Ave in Tustin.
