CARSON, Calif. – Orange County SC’s Thomas Enevoldsen scored his seventh goal of the season in the final 10 minutes and goalkeeper Andre Rawls notched his league-leading seventh shutout as the visitors claimed a 1-0 victory against the LA Galaxy II on Sunday evening at StubHub Center. The Galaxy II had an early chance as a long ball forward by Emmanuel Appiah put Ethan Zubak into space, and his first-time finish produced a good save by Orange County goalkeeper Andre Rawls. Orange County produced some chances but didn’t test Los Dos goalkeeper Justin Vom Steeg in the first half as efforts by Thomas Juel-Nielsen and Aodhan Quinn from set pieces missed the target, but Rawls was called into action again eight minutes before halftime as Geoffrey Acheampong fired a shot to the right side of the net after a corner kick was half-cleared. The Galaxy II also went close 12 minutes into the second half as Miguel Aguilar fired a low shot to the right corner that Rawls got down well to save, while Ulysses Llanez Jr. was also kept out by Rawls shortly after. Orange County had a golden chance to take the lead in the 70th minute, only for Giovanni Ramos-Godoy to send his shot just wide of the right post after being set up in the right side of the penalty area by Enevoldsen, but with eight minutes to go the visitors took the lead as they kept a corner kick alive, allowing Enevoldsen to put home a low drive through a cluster of players in front of him. Aguilar again forced a safe by Rawls with a long-range drive two minutes later, but the Galaxy II were unable to find a breakthrough as its Southern California rivals walked away with a big victory.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Orange County was far from sharp in front of goal on Sunday night, but when its first shot on goal for the game arrived with eight minutes to go it produced a big road victory as Thomas Enevoldsen’s low finish found its way into the net to earn a second victory in the past three games. Enevoldsen had a hand in setting up Orange County’s biggest chance of the game prior to his goal, with his clever pass finding Giovanni Ramos-Godoy for a finish that was just off target, but when Mats Bjurman laid off a pass to the Dane for his best opportunity of the game Enevoldsen made no mistake for his seventh goal of the season.

  • 2. The visitors wouldn’t have had the chance to claim a victory late on if its hadn’t been for the goalkeeping of Andre Rawls, who put in another superb display to keep a dangerous Galaxy II attack off the board for his league-leading seventh shutout of the season. Rawls’ seven-save performance saw him make some outstanding stops, notably getting down to keep out Miguel Aguilar’s low effort to the right corner just before the hour-mark, and the New York City FC loanee is now second only to Tulsa Roughnecks FC’s Fabian Cerda in saves this season. Considering the contrasting fortunes of Orange County and Tulsa, it’s evident how important Rawls has been for his side this season.

  • 3. The Galaxy II had a chance at a third consecutive win, and on another day might have found it if not for Rawls’ superlative display, but with the side still trying to dig its way out of a slow start to get back in contention for the playoffs this will feel like a missed opportunity to put one over its Southern California rivals. Los Dos did plenty right, but sometimes you need a break to go your way and on Sunday that moment never arrived for Head Coach Mike Munoz’s side. Man of the Match

Andre Rawls, Orange County SC – Rawls’ seven-save shutout kept his side in the game on the road and ended up allowing the visitors to grab all three points with a late winner.
