Match Recap
IRVINE, Calif. (April 26, 2018) – Despite dominating most of the possession during last night's match, Orange County SC suffered a loss against Rio Grande Valley, ending their four-match winning streak. RGV FC applied constant pressure and capitalized against the Orange County SC defense to record their first victory of the season at home at H-E-B Park.
Orange County SC forward Thomas Enevoldsen was first to attack in the opening minutes of the match when in the 6th minute, he fired a shot from 20 yards out driving the ball just missing inches over the net. Orange County SC keeper Andre Rawls had his skills tested early on as he made a diving save toward the bottom right corner of the net preventing an RGV FC goal by Omar Ontiveros. The Toros scored their first goal of the night in the 36th minute as midfielder Jose Rodriguez capitalized on a cross. The two clubs would end the first half with Rio Grande Valley FC up one nil.
“I think possession can be misleading at times. That’s great to have the ball but there’s a difference in possession and positive possession,” said Orange County SC Head Coach Braeden Cloutier. “We were not as progressive in our possession tonight and too slow at switching the point of attack.”
The second half saw a different Orange County SC as corner kick by Aodhan Quinn was headed by Alex Crognale from the center of the box only to be saved by Toros goalkeeper Nico Corti. Corti would deny Orange County SC a second chance when Thomas Enevoldsen sent a powerful strike just inside the penalty area in the 76th minute. Enevoldsen would fire another shot from 30 yards out four minutes later, but it would go wide and right. RGV FC forward Aldo Quintanilla would close out the night with a goal in the left corner of the net off of an assist by Todd Wharton in the 89th minute, providing RGV FC with a 2-0 victory.
“We were definitely not satisfied with the effort in the first half, way too casual which led to silly turnovers and cost of a goal,” said Cloutier. “I thought the attitude was much better in the second half, but our play was still not as sharp as we would like it. The good thing is we have a quick turnaround. We will learn from tonight and expect a much better performance back home Saturday night.”
Orange County SC return home Saturday, April 28th, where they will go head-to-head against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at the Championship Soccer Stadium at the Orange County Great Park at 7:00 PM (PST). Fans attending Saturday’s match will also have the opportunity to join forces with Orange County SC, Soccer For Hope and Be The Match as they team up to find a bone marrow match for 5-mont-old Bruno Lara.
