Orange County SC fell 2-1 against Monterey Bay FC on Saturday night. Championship Stadium recorded their largest ever crowd, with a sold-out stadium to support the County Boys in their playoff push. Orange County remains in playoff contention, sitting seventh in the Western Conference.
OCSC entered the match with momentum after last week’s win against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. The County Boys pushed to earn more offensive chances and pressure their Northern California rivals.
The Black & Orange found the scoresheet in the 5’ minute after Monterey Bay’s Quinton Elliot took down Lyam MacKinnon in the box. Ousmane Sylla stepped up to take the penalty kick and sent the ball to the right of the net as keeper Jacob Jackson dove left.
Orange County took five shots in the first half with four on target while holding 42% possession against Monterey Bay.
The complexion of the match changed dramatically in the 45+1’ minute of stoppage time when Tom Brewitt was shown a red card for a jersey tug that was ruled a denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.
The decision reduced Orange County SC to 10 men just before the halftime whistle, sending OCSC into the locker room protecting a 1-0 advantage but facing the challenge of playing the entire second half shorthanded.
Orange County continued to fight in the second half but found an unlucky moment in the 61’ when Monterey Bay were given a penalty after a foul in the box by Kevin Partida. Sebastian Lletget took the shot that slipped inches past Alex Rando.
Monterey Bay earned another goal off of a set piece in the 65’ minute. Zack Farnsworth headed the corner from Lletget past Rando to give Monterey the lead.
OCSC continued to press for an equalizer as the match carried into seven minutes of stoppage time but were unable to find a goal. Orange County ended the match with 48% possession, and 12 shots with five on target compared to Monterey’s 14 shots with six on target.
Orange County SC heads to El Paso next week before returning home for its final regular-season home match on October 17, featuring a special Fan Appreciation Night and Beer Fest celebration. For tickets and more information, click HERE.
