OCSC PLAYS SAN DIEGO LOYAL IN HIGHLY ANTICIPATED 1ST MEETING

IRVINE, Calif. (August 12, 2020) – Orange County SC will journey south to San Diego for the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, after two postponed games and a 17-day layoff, OC are ready to take all three points from their hosts. The hosts currently sit in second place in Group B with eleven points from six matches. OC sits in fourth in Group B, with five points from three matches. This will be the first-ever meeting between Orange County and San Diego.

San Diego’s last match against Las Vegas Lights on Saturday, August 8 was postponed.

This will be Orange County’s first match since holding Phoenix into one goal over two back to back matches at home over 2 weeks ago.

After taking four from a possible six points against Phoenix and being named number one in the USL power rankings, OCSC will be full of confidence heading into their first away fixture.

The OC defense has only conceded one goal in three matches, and the dominant backline looks capable of continuing their success. Ugo Okoli opened his scoring account with OC on July 25th and joined Kevin Coleman on the list of goal scorers in the young season.

OC face no selection issues going into this match.

The match kicks off at 7 p.m. Torero Stadium in San Diego. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ in the United States.

San Diego’s last match against Las Vegas Lights on Saturday, August 8 was postponed.

ORANGE COUNTY SC AGREES TO HISTORIC TRANSFER WITH VFL WOLFSBURG FOR BRYANG KAYO

IRVINE, Calif. (July 27, 2020) – Orange County SC today announced the transfer of 18-year-old midfielder, Bryang Kayo to VfL Wolfsburg of the German Bundesliga, as reported last week by numerous media outlets such as ESPN and Sports Illustrated.

“We pride ourselves at being at the forefront of player development in the United States and our first ever official European transfer is definitely a landmark moment for our club,” said OCSC President of Soccer Operations, Oliver Wyss. ”Bryang is a top talent with a great career in front of him and we are proud to have played our part in his development. At the same time, we are actively working on more exciting European transfers and on signing new top youth prospects to Orange County!”

The transfer is a significant milestone for Orange County SC, as Kayo becomes the first-ever player to be transferred from the Club to an elite European team. Orange County SC also becomes the first USL team to transfer a player to the German Bundesliga. Since Orange County SC’s rebrand in 2016, the organization has placed a significant emphasis on player development with the promise to provide young talented players a professional pathway. The transfer marks the first player to come through the system and fulfilling the Club’s promise to provide a clear pathway for players to Europe.

Kayo, 18 joined the club in September 2019 and made the matchday roster numerous times before being selected to represent the U.S. at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in October. He made his U-17 World Cup debut against the Netherlands, coming on as a second-half substitute.

Kayo will now join up with VfL Wolfsburg and initially play with the Bundesliga club’s second team, WFL Wolfsburg II, who competes in the Regionalliga Nord league. Per club policy, the terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

Orange County Pick Up First Win of 2020

IRVINE, Calif. (July 25, 2020) – Orange County SC picked up a big three points and moved within striking distance of the playoff places on Saturday night.

With a few lineup changes, including Frederik Due starting between the sticks, OC looked to start on the front against the visitors after the opening match. Phoenix continued their trademark press and looked determined to score first, but the visitors could not break through the Orange County defense.

IRVINE, Calif. (July 25, 2020) – Orange County SC picked up a big three points and moved within striking distance of the playoff places on Saturday night.

There was no love lost between the two sides early on, as Santi Moar came in late and high on Ugo Okoli just nine minutes in. Moar received a yellow for his challenge, while Okoli stayed down before receiving treatment.

Jones nearly scored just a few minutes later, knocking the ball around Phoenix keeper Zac Lubin, but the forward lost his footing as the pitch gave out as he turned.

On the other end of the pitch, OC remained strong in defense and prevented chances for the visitors.

In the 20th minute, Okoli opened his scoring account for OCSC, latching onto a through ball from Aodhan Quinn and burying the ball at the near post with his left foot.

Phoenix looked to answer back quickly, but play was mostly back and forth despite a few chances for Okoli to score a brace. Rangers loanee Daniel Finlayson also got involved, putting his left footed effort from distance just over the crossbar.

Phoenix had a clear cut chance seconds later in the 43rd minute. Due was chipped by Junior Flemmings, and Santi Moar rushed to the far post, but the Spaniard volleyed his chance off of the crossbar and Due gathered.

The horror continued for Moar in the 46th minute, as he shoved OC head coach Braeden Cloutier and received his marching orders. The exchange occurred during a stoppage of play, for which the coach received a caution.

The frustration for Phoenix, down a man, only grew as the game progressed. After the restart, the visitors looked like anything but the highest scoring side in the league.

OC pressed the visitors and looked for a second goal to ease some pressure on the backline.

A triple substitution just before the hour mark made it clear that Phoenix were willing to commit numbers forward, with Jack Barmby, Lagos Kunga and Sean Stanton all coming on.

Phoenix had their best run of play following the missed penalty, but the man disadvantage was noticeable in the buildup play. Despite a few set-piece attempts, the visitors still could not find the back of the net. With Phoenix pushing more numbers forward in search of an equalizer, OC looked more and more confident as the match wore on.

Late on Okoli, Coleman and late substitute Chandler Hoffman all missed close chances to score OC’s second goal of the night.

Phoenix also had a few chances and sent up Lubin in an attempt to score an equalizer.

After 95 minutes of play, OC picked up all three points.

After the match, Okoli was pleased with the result. “It’s always nice to get off the mark, or get a goal in any game,” he said. He continued, “We worked hard in training to make sure it happened today.”

Head coach Braeden Cloutier was critical of the condition of the pitch but thrilled with his players’ performances. “There’s no excuses, ever. We were structurally sound. We kept things really organized at the back and gave ourselves chances in the transition.” His only disappointment with the match? “We didn’t score enough goals tonight, but we gave ourselves plenty of opportunities and kept another clean sheet.”

ORANGE COUNTY SC SEEKS 3-POINTS AGAINST PHOENIX IN WEEK FOUR

IRVINE, Calif. (July 25, 2020) – Orange County SC are set to welcome back Phoenix Rising FC for the second Group B match of the 2020 season.

The last match was a closely fought contest, with both goals coming in the second half. Phoenix struck first through Junior Flemmings, but the Jamaican’s goal was canceled out by a Kevin Coleman strike in the 74th minute.

The players will be full of confidence after the last match and will look to secure all three points in the second matchup. Phoenix Rising currently sit atop the group with seven points from three matches played, while Orange County are in fourth, with two points from two matches. The top two teams will advance into the playoffs at the end of group play.

Wingers Darwin Jones and Kevin Coleman came on as substitutes in the previous match, and their pace led to a succession of chances that culminated in Coleman’s goal. But the majority of

the match was a defensive battle, with Orange County limiting the highest-scoring offense in the league. Building on that defensive success and transitioning to quick attacking play is Orange County’s key to victory.

OC face no selection issues. Phoenix will be without Kontor Owusu-Ansah after his extra-time red card in the last match.

The match kicks off at 7 p.m. Pacific at Championship Soccer Stadium at the Orange County Great Park. Fan attendance is currently prohibited due to state mandates concerning COVID-19. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ in the United States and locally on Cox YurView.

OC Draw with Phoenix Rising in First Match Back

Over three months after the last league match, Orange County SC welcomed Phoenix Rising FC to Championship Soccer Stadium. Phoenix came in excellent form, having scored 10 goals in their opening two matches.

Orange County set up with a five-man midfield, keeping Danny Crisostomo and Aodhan Quinn holding. Phoenix looked to dominate the match, creating chances with some regularity. Fullbacks Nathan Smith and Daniel Finlayson were able to stop most of the visitors’ attempts from wide positions.

It was also a busy match for the officials, who were consistently busy as a result of the physicality. Solomon Asante picked up the first booking of the match after a heavy challenge on Smith. Not long after, Forrester left his mark on the match and picked up his first booking of the season.

OC found themselves on the back foot early, but adapted and looked to frustrate the opposition by keeping men behind the ball. Far from the usual possession-based style, instead Orange County looked to launch counter attacks against the run of play. Ugo Okoli and Brian Iloski looked to latch onto the long balls and fashion themselves chances, but the Phoenix back line was able to prevent any shots on target.

Despite a few chances for Phoenix from some set pieces late on, the first half ended with both sides scoreless.

The goal proved to be a confidence boost for OC, who continued to create chances. Jones nearly found the back of the net on 83 minutes, but Zac Lubin was able to save and preserve the scoreline.

The final minutes of the game would continue to be physical, with a succession of fouls from OC and Phoenix that killed off the momentum of the match.

In extra time, Darwin Jones caught onto a through ball behind the Phoenix defense. The winger sprinted towards the Phoenix goal before being fouled by Kontor, and the fullback was shown a straight red card.

Lubin saved the ensuing free kick, and Phoenix looked dangerous in the last two minutes of extra time, with Flemmings and Calistri both pulling their shots just wide of the far post.

“Two months ago I didn’t think we would have a season,” said Braeden Cloutier. “That was our first 11v11 game in two weeks… I thought we grew into the game.” He continued, “I think after looking at the last few weeks, we’re definitely happy to get a point, but once we look at how the game went we’re disappointed not to win.”

Orange County SC Reopens 2020 Season at Home Against Rival Phoenix Rising FC

IRVINE, Calif. (July 16, 2020) – Orange County SC is set to resume the 2020 USL Championship season with two home games against Western Conference rival Phoenix Rising FC beginning on July 16th.

Orange County fought to a goalless draw with El Paso Locomotive in their first and only match of this season. This will be the first game back for OCSC in 132 days and is the first match in Group B Play for OC.

Orange County stayed busy during the temporary suspension of play with 2 big additions to the club, adding youth international defender Kobi Henry and goal-scoring forward Chandler Hoffman.

Henry a 16-year-old, central defender joins the club from Inter Miami CF Academy. The Florida native made 16 appearances in the Development Academy this past season for Inter Miami CF Academy, where his performances saw him receive Youth National Team recognition. The signing of Henry bolstered a defense that features a mix of current and former internationals, including Michael Orozco and Blake Malone.

Hoffman on loan from Birmingham FC is a proven goal scorer and will be a great offensive weapon alongside Jones, and Okoli. The Birmingham, Alabama native made 17 appearances with Birmingham in 2019 with 4 goals, after joining Legion FC as the club’s first-ever signing in August 2018. Hoffman is yet to make an appearance in 2020 due to the temporary suspension of play. Hoffman has a lot of experience playing in Southern California having played college ball at UCLA and playing for the LA Galaxy in 2013 and as a member of the LA Galaxy's MLS Cup winner in 2014. The striker has scored 28 goals and assisted 13 more in just 89 USL matches.

OCSC returned to full training on June 30th under special protocols, but the club showed up fit and ready to play.

All Orange County SC players are available for selection. Phoenix Rising may not risk a few players who recently recovered from COVID-19.
