For Orange County SC, the connection to the world’s most prestigious association football tournament runs deeper. The club’s Technical Director and Senior Advisor, Frans Hoek, has coached the Polish, Dutch and Saudi Arabian National teams in the World Cup. His first experience was coaching Poland during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, he coached the Netherlands National Team to a third-place finish against Brazil. Hoek, is currently coaching the Saudi Arabian National Team in this year’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Russia.
In addition to Hoek, Orange County SC forward Thomas Enevoldsen is also no stranger to the World Cup. Enevoldsen made his full international debut for Denmark against Hungary in the World Cup qualifying game in 2009 and started in their first match against Holland during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. During the 2010 World Cup, Denmark lost 3-1 to Japan and another familiar face to Orange County SC fans. Keisuke Honda, whose company Honda Estilo (and their youth club Soltillo) joined the ownership group of Orange County SC in December 2017, is currently making his third World Cup appearance. Honda scored the only goal in Japan’s 2010 FIFA World Cup match against Cameroon. He appeared and scored again in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first Japanese player to score in two World Cups and was the top Japanese scorer in FIFA World Cup history with three total goals. On June 19th, Honda substituted in for Shinji Kagawa in the 70thminute during Japan’s match against Columbia of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
“We could not be more excited to host our fans and the Irvine community at our home stadium for the biggest soccer game on the planet,” said General Manager and Executive Vice President, Oliver Wyss. “The Championship Stadium is the home of professional soccer in Orange County, and every young soccer player should dream of representing their country in the World Cup; what better place to start than sitting on the field of their local professional club.”

“I am extremely happy for Ami! He has been the most selfless and most positive teammate I’ve seen in quite some time,” said Orange County SC Head Coach Braeden Cloutier. “Ami has been training very well and has been patiently waiting for his opportunity. Unfortunately this season, he has quite a few guys ahead of him that have been solid and have played the bulk of the minutes. But he keeps training hard, supporting his teammates and took his opportunity tonight. You could see how much it meant for the rest of the team when he scored, what he means to the team!”
Even with five goals on the board, Orange County SC did not let their foot off the gas. In the 90th minute, Enevoldsen sent the cross to Mats Bjurman who calmly finished into an empty net from close range, scoring his first goal of the season for the club.
“I am very happy that Mats got his goal,” said Cloutier. “It was definitely well deserved. Mats is one of those players that every coach loves and wants on their team. Fantastic attitude, work ethic and can play in multiple positions. Mats is another example of the type of character that we want here in Orange County! Very selfless and a great teammate.”
With six goals from six different goal scorers and solid performances from the entire team, Orange County SC closed out the night, taking all three points. “I thought it was a great team win tonight,” said Cloutier. “Not too often do you score six goals in a game and even more rare to have six different goal scorers. That is proof of a great team effort.”

IRVINE, Calif. (June 25, 2018) – Orange County SC fans knew they were going to be in for some exciting football on Saturday night, considering Orange County SC’s five nil triumph over Tulsa Roughnecks FC back in March. Orange County SC did not disappoint as they put in an thrilling performance thrashing the Roughnecks 6 – 1, tying the club goal scoring record set in 2013.
The first goal of the night came early in the sixteenth minute as Aodhan Quinn’s corner kick found Jos Hooiveld who headed the ball into the top corner. Minutes later, Thomas Enevoldsen found himself through on goal, before squaring the ball for Michael Seaton whose left footed shot was well saved by Fabian Cerda. Quinn provided his second assist of the night in the 37th minute as he drove at the Tulsa backline before, sliding a clinical pass to Thomas Enevoldsen who fired home to record his 9th USL goal of the season.
The Roughnecks pulled one back shortly into the second half when, Jon Bakero took advantage off a failed clearance from a Tulsa free kick, with a first time finish from close range. A corner led to Orange County SC’s third goal of the night. Jos Hooiveld fired a shot that deflected off the top of the cross bar, only for the ball to drop to Alex Crognale who nodded it in from close range. In the 65th minute, Adrian Jusino fouled Christian Duke in the penalty area leading to Orange County SC’s fourth goal of the night. Quinn stepped up to take the penalty, converting it at the bottom right corner of the net. In the 86th minute, Duke setup Amirgy Pineda, who came in off the bench in the 71st minute with a perfect pass. Pineda fired the ball into the bottom left corner, recording his first ever professional goal.
Orange County SC head on the road for their next two matches. The first stop is Phoenix as they take on Phoenix Rising FC on Friday, June 29 at 6:30 PM. The team then heads to Colorado Springs where they will battle Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Tuesday, July 3 at 6:00 PM.
