Orange County SC faced the Tampa Bay Rowdies in a Saturday night battle between the top two teams of the USL Championship. Despite a 3-0 loss, Orange County remains top of the Western Conference.
The Black & Orange started the first half with a ferocity that threw Tampa Bay off their game plan. OC demonstrated an insistent attack that continued to frustrate the Rowdies into executing early fouls.
The match saw a shift when Tampa was gifted an early penalty after a collision with goaltender Alex Rando inside the County box. Matthew Myers took the shot in the 23’ minute from the spot and put it towards the top left corner, just slightly out of Rando’s reach. The Rowdies took a 1-0 lead, with Orange County fighting for an equalizer.
Orange County reset and worked Tampa Bay into their own half, earning 59% of the possession in the first half and continuing to press for opportunities in the Rowdies half. The teams finished the first half with Tampa Bay leading 1-0, but OC took most of the momentum and set the tone for the next half.
The second half followed a similar pattern as the first with the County Boys maintaining intense pressure against the Rowdies. However, in the 58’ minute Tampa Bay capitalized on an uncalled foul against Ousmane Sylla and took the ball up the field to the County goal. While the defense was able to stop the initial shot, a scramble in the box took the ball to Marco Micaletto’s feet and he sent it to the top left corner. Tampa Bay found one more goal in the 89’ minute with a ball from Karsen Henderlong.
In the battle of first-place teams, Orange County showed they could control the game and work the middle of the field but couldn’t grasp a complete flow of play in order to take the 3 points. OCSC finished the match with 60% possession, five shots taken, and only 12 fouls compared to Tampa Bay’s 40% possession, 11 shots, and a hefty 18 fouls.
