IRVINE, Calif. (April 9, 2018) – In the first of three meetings between the teams this season, Orange County Soccer Club proved they are the team to beat. The club continued their winning streak with a three nil victory against LA Galaxy II in the first edition of the 405 Derby. The victory came at home in Chapionship Soccer Stadium at Orange County Great Park on Saturday night following back-to-back wins on the road last week. Orange County SC dominated possession with 586 passes on the night.

Orange County SC got off to a fast start as midfielder Koji Hashimoto attempted a header in the first minute of play but Los Dos goalkeeper, Eric Lopez, made the save. Los Dos would find themselves a man down in the 30th minute when defender Jean Engola was shown a straight red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity, fouling Orange County SC forward Michael Seaton from behind. In the 35th minute, Orange County SC defender Oscar Sorto sent a beautiful cross to Seaton who’s timing was slightly off as he headed the ball high and sent it sailing over the net. In the 45th minute, Seaton sent a beautifully weighted pass over Los Dos defenders to an awaiting Mark Segbers. Segbers, who came in as a substitute for Richard Chaplow in the 23rd minute, did an excellent job of towing the line and getting behind LA Galaxy defenders John Requejo and Tomas Hilliard-Arce to put the ball right between the legs of goalkeeper Eric Lopez. With his first professional goal in the books, Segbers would put Orange County SC up 1-0 going into the half.
“What a whirlwind scoring my first professional goal! Lots of emotion but I have to thank God first for all the blessings,” said Segbers. “Overall a good night, one I won’t forget.”

With a renewed intensity, Orange County SC would come out in the second half keeping pressure on LA Galaxy II. Forward Justin Dhillon tagged a ball out wide right at the net in the 49th minute but he would be denied by Orange County SC goalkeeper Andre Rawls who recorded his third clean sheet of the season. Los Dos were denied twice more when in the 50thminute of play Adrian Vera fired a shot at goal however Rawls saved smartly to his right, and the rebound fell to Dhillon who’s strike was cleared off the line by OCSC defender Alex Crognale. The 54th minute saw another Los Dos player see red when midfielder Alex Mendez was sent off with a straight red card for serious foul play. Mendez lunged in with two cleats up, putting Orange County SC midfielder Christian Duke in a dangerous situation.
“We raised the intensity,” said Segbers. “We wanted a hot start in the second half to put another one up on the scoreboard early. Try to kill their spirits and take control of the game.”
In the 59th minute of play, Orange County SC would do just that as Koji Hashimoto sent a beautifully crafted pass at the top of the box to Mark Segbers. Segbers went across his body onto his left foot, sending the ball curling into the corner of the net, recording a brace for the night. In his debut for Orange County SC, forward Nansel Selbol, shut down LA Galaxy’s hope for a win with a goal in the 89th minute that rivaled his 2017 USL Goal of the Year. Coming in as a substitute in the 71st minute for Noah Powder, Selbol made it clear he is a dangerous threat to the opponent. Selbol patiently squared up against Galaxy II’s Jonathan Hernandez, putting his foot up around the ball up and over goalkeeper Eric Lopez for a world-class finish in the right corner of the net. He would leave the match a minute later due to injury, but it was his sublime finish which was the moment of the match.
