This is a matchup between a team in Orange County that was a founding member of the USL in 2010 and a newbie in Oakland who are entering its first season in the league.

The OCSC home game on Saturday, June 12, opposing Oakland Roots SC, will celebrate Grad Week with all graduating Junior High and High School students and families. To honor the graduates, We Share and UHSM will work with OCSC to award at least 100 tickets. All Community Corner seats to the June 12

game will be offered on first-come, first-serve basis to qualified graduates. To request tickets to this event only, graduates can email chris@uhsm.com and ask for sets of two (2) or four (4) seats.

Moving into July and beyond, the season-long OCSC Community Corner will continue to honor nonprofits and their staff and volunteers with free tickets that can be requested as four-game mini-plans by qualifying nonprofits. After four matches, Orange County have six points with seven goals scored and six conceded for a +1 goal differential. Chris Wehan and Eero Markkanen lead all scorers with 2 goals on the season and Brent Richards leads the team in assists with 2. 

Orange County SC is coming off of a 3-1 victory at Heart Health Stadium against Sacramento Republic FC. The goals were scored by Ronaldo Damus, Eero Markkanen, and Brian Iloski.

San Diego Loyal drew 2-2 on the road last weekend at Phoenix Rising. Miguel Berry and Jack Blake scored the two goals for San Diego. Phoenix scored both of their goals in stoppage time at the end of the match.

During the penultimate game of the 2021 Orange County SC (OCSC) preseason against Azusa Pacific University, Ronaldo Damus (DEH-muhs) saw his teammate Raymond Drai alone with the ball on the left side of the penalty box. Drai crossed the ball over three defenders where Damus waited to head it past the keeper for the game-tying goal.
 
“I felt very good and happy to score for this team,” Damus said. “I felt comfortable to be part of the system and use my speed at the top [of the formation].”
 
Once the ball hit the back of the net, Damus ran with a huge smile to Drai and they celebrated the goal together. It was a special moment for them since Drai told the young Haitian striker that he would assist him on a goal during the pregame. Though the assists do not just come on the pitch, Drai has helped with Damus's adaptation to life in Orange County.

In his only full year with the Texan club, he won the 2019 USL League One Golden Boot after scoring 16 goals in 20 regular-season matches. Prior to that, Damus featured for the FC Dallas U-19 Academy squad and Real Hope FA in Haiti. In addition, he has been capped by Haiti’s national team at both the youth and senior international level. 

In January 2021, Damus signed with Orange County SC.

“It’s the way we set up on the field and how we defend,” Damus said. “We defend as a team, attack as a team and every player feels positive for this team. It helps me to show my qualities.”

OCSC offers him a unique opportunity to achieve his dream of playing professional soccer in Europe because of the club’s international partnership with Rangers F.C. in Scotland. With that in mind, Damus brings in qualities that allow him to contribute in both the scoring and assisting of goals as well as the motivation to develop in Orange County.

When Damus first arrived, he did not immediately train or explore his new confines. Instead, he was required to spend 10 days alone in quarantine.
 
“It was not easy at first,” Damus said. “A new organization, everything is new and I miss my family and girlfriend in Haiti. Now, it is really good and I am very happy. The team has been very nice with me and I have gotten close with the young guys, like Raymond [Drai].”

Drai, who at 16-years-old made his professional debut for OCSC at the end of the 2020 season, took the initiative to help get Damus settled into his new home.

“He was coming from a different state and even country with a different language,” said Drai. “I wanted to introduce myself… and we were able to connect because of the language.”

Damus speaks French, which is Haiti’s official language along with Haitian Creole. Drai understands and speaks just enough French, thanks to his father, to communicate with his new teammate.

“Ronaldo [Damus] is a cool and humble guy and has made so much progress since his first preseason game against LA Galaxy II,” Drai said.
 
Damus has been an aggressive force on the wing for OC so far this season and has started in all three regular-season matches. He looks to continue his momentum in a rematch on the road against Sacramento this Saturday.
 
“I want to do everything for the club so that we can be successful,” Damus said. “I want to win a championship.”

Orange County SC, OC’s only professional soccer team, already have a strategic partnership with Scottish champion and Champions League club Glasgow Rangers. There will be 30+ clubs across two age divisions participating in the first national tournament put on featuring the professional clubs in United Soccer League (USL) after holding two regional events prior to the pandemic. 

“This is another milestone in the ongoing growth of our club and we are proud to send an OCSC U17 boys and girls team to the Academy Cup,” President of Soccer Operations Oliver Wyss said. “For the last few years we have successfully developed the top boys players through our one of a kind pathway but we also want to make sure we are providing the same opportunities for the very talented girls players in Orange County.” 

This will be OCSC’s second appearance at a USL Academy Cup event and the first where the club will also be represented by a team in the girls division. Both teams' rosters were built by identifying the top talent across the club’s Youth Soccer Network through camps and clinics.

Senior team head coach Braeden Cloutier is reinforcing much of what is being seen at the Academy and Youth Soccer Network team level. This allows for players to transition between the different levels while being familiar with the club’s culture and style of play.

Despite OCSC not having a women’s senior team yet, OCSC plans to have a similar Pathway to Professional Soccer on the women’s side through its partnership with Rangers Women’s F.C., who compete in the Scottish Women’s Premier League.

“It’s every soccer player's dream to play pro soccer, and this is where I grew up. So it makes it even more special,” said Hanes. “I appreciate the opportunity OCSC and the coaching staff have given me so I am here to work as hard I can every day to help the team win.”
 
Anderson, who hails from Encinitas, California, also joins Orange County SC from San Diego Surf SC. Anderson started playing competitively for the Encinitas Express and Rancho Santa Fe Attack when he was seven years old. He joined the San Diego Surf when he was 14-years-old.

Hanes and Anderson are the first two players in the history of Orange County Soccer Club to sign USL Academy contracts and will compete for OCSC in the 2021 USL Academy Cup in Tampa, Florida. The tournament takes place between May 28th and May 31st and will feature 32 USL Academy clubs from around the country. The OCSC Academy boys team will be accompanied by the OCSC Academy girls team that will compete in the women's division, consisting of 14 USL clubs also from around the country.

Breen, born in Bellshill, Scotland, was a part of the Rangers FC youth system before spending time at Partick Thistle FC and most recently, Queen of the South FC in the Scottish Championship, the second tier of Scottish Professional Football. In 2021, the center back started in 15 of 16 matches, notching one goal and one assist for Queen of the South.

"The second Rangers mentioned the opportunity to come to Orange County. It was a no-brainer,” said Breen. “I was out on loan in Scotland and learned so much from it. I know by coming to Orange County I’m going to progress a lot more in my career and do well for myself and the team. I can’t wait to get started in a new environment and work with my new teammates and staff. I can’t wait to get out onto the pitch now and get started." 
 
Thomson, born in Glasgow, Scotland, was a part of the Rangers FC youth system where he played along with Palmer and Finlayson before spending time at Clyde FC in Scottish League One, the third tier of Scottish Professional Football. In 2021, the midfielder played in 10 matches and tallied one assist. Thomson was also part of Scotland’s U16 and U17 national teams and scored a goal in an international friendly against England’s U16 squad in 2014.

Breen and Thomson are the 12th and 13th offseason additions for Orange County SC. Orange County’s 2021 USL Regular Season home opener is set for Saturday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Championship Soccer Stadium against the Sacramento Republic live on ESPN+. The club will return to USL action on Sunday, May 16 against the Tacoma Defiance at Cheney Stadium at 12 p.m. PT live on ESPN+.
