Orange County SC (OCSC): ¡Bienvenido a Orange County! Desde que firmaste con nosotros, ¿qué has aprendido sobre el club? ¿Ya te has conectado con tus compañeros de equipo?
Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres (Cubo): Sí, estoy muy contento con esta nueva oportunidad. Estoy muy contento con este nuevo reto, con este desafío que tengo enfrente del club. Sé que obviamente que somos los actuales campeones, que el torneo pasado tuvimos un torneo muy bueno. Sé que hay muchísima afición apoyando. También estoy muy contento porque hay mucha comunidad latina en esta zona. Sé que el equipo tiene mucha afición latina y la verdad que me siento muy contento por ese lado porque sé que me voy a sentir muy apoyado. Desde que se anunció mi llegada al equipo de Orange County la gente me ha bombardeado, me ha llenado de mensajes positivos, de bienvenida, de mensajes de apoyo para que pueda ser lo mejor de mí en el equipo. Y bueno, eso me hace sentir muy contento, me enorgullece bastante y me motiva para conectar rápido con mis compañeros, con el cuerpo técnico, para hacer las cosas bien y que podamos tener resultados positivos.

Orange County SC (OCSC): Welcome to Orange County! Since you signed with us, what have you learned about the club? Have you connected with your teammates already?
Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres (Cubo): Yes, I am very happy with this new opportunity. I am very happy with this new challenge, with this challenge that I have in front of the club. I know that obviously we are the current champions, that last tournament we had a very good tournament. I know there are a lot of fans supporting the team. I am also very happy because there is a large Latino community in this area. I know that the team has a lot of Latino fans and the truth is that I feel very happy on that side because I know that I will feel very supported. Since my arrival at Orange County Soccer Club was announced, people have bombarded me with positive messages, welcome messages, messages of support so that I can be the best of me in the team. And well, that makes me feel very happy, it makes me quite proud and motivates me to quickly connect with my teammates, with the coaching staff, to do things well and that we can have positive results.

OCSC: Cuando estuviste con Houston Dynamo, tuviste un gran impacto, de hecho, convirtiéndote en el máximo goleador mexicano en la MLS en ese momento. ¿Qué puedes decirle a los fans sobre tu objetivo y misión aquí en el Campeonato de la USL con OCSC?
Cubo: Primero porque, ‘el orange’’ el anaranjado me cae muy bien, y en Houston usan un color similar y le platicaba con mi esposa que el naranja me queda bien. Entonces bueno, espero poder seguir haciendo cosas positivas en la MLS. Gracias a Dios he hecho cosas buenas y me ha ido muy bien. Ahora en la USL creo que va a ser algo muy similar. Creo que va a ser una liga muy fuerte, muy competitiva, en la que tengo que dar lo mejor de mí todos los días en los entrenamientos y en los partidos para poder hacer cosas buenas y positivas junto con mis compañeros. Y bueno, la verdad es que estoy muy muy motivado, muy ilusionado por jugar mi primer partido con la camiseta de Orange County. Y bueno, espero que podamos festejar muchos triunfos con la afición. Muchos partidos ganados y que también pueda festejar muchos goles con los fanáticos.
OCSC: When you were with Houston Dynamo, you made a huge impact, in fact, becoming the leading Mexican goal scorer in MLS at the time. What can you let the fans know about your objective and mission here in the USL Championship with OCSC?
Cubo: First of all, orange is a color that I favor a lot, because in Houston, there is a similarity in color, and it was something that I talked about with my wife that orange suits me well. So I hope I can continue to do positive things in MLS. Thank God I have done good things and I have done very well. Now in the USL I think it’s going to be something very similar. I think it’s going to be a very strong league, very competitive, in which I have to give my best every day in training and in games to be able to do good and positive things together with my teammates. And well, the truth is that I am very, very motivated, very excited to play my first game with the Orange County jersey. And well, I hope we can celebrate many triumphs with the fans.

OCSC: ¿Cómo te adaptaste a moverte por equipos cuando jugabas en tu carrera? ¿Qué tan bien aprendiste de las diferentes filosofías de los equipos?
Cubo: Sí, he tenido una carrera en la que he pasado por equipos importantes, equipos en los que he aprendido muchísimo, en las ciudades en las que he estado y también los vestidores que me ha tocado, los compañeros que he tenido. Pues bueno, ustedes saben, ¿no? Cruz Azul, Pumas y Chivas, son equipos donde he tenido compañeros con gran jerarquía, tanto extranjeros como mexicanos y bueno, eso me ha hecho madurar bastante. He aprendido muchísimo de todos los equipos en los que he estado en México, este también en los Estados Unidos y bueno, esa adaptación es adaptarme lo más pronto posible. Ahora en California, Los Angeles, Orange County todo eso son zonas que más o menos conozco, en las que cuando estaba en Chivas USA también me movía por esas ciudades, por Carson, California, por Long Beach, porque por esas zonas entonces sé que me voy a sentir muy cómodo ahí. Sé que hay mucha afición latina, sé que hay mucho mexicano, también mucha afición de las Chivas de acá en Estados Unidos hay Chivas, América, Pumas, de todo. Pero bueno, cuando la selección nacional juega en este condado se unen todos esos equipos para apoyar. Y bueno, es lo que te decía. He recibido muchísimos mensajes en mis redes sociales de aficionados de diferentes equipos de México que viven ahí en Irvine o por esa zona de California y me están dando la bienvenida, me están haciendo sentir muy cómodo y creo que me voy a sentir así ahora en el equipo, en la ciudad, me voy a sentir muy cómodo y estoy seguro que eso se va a reflejar en a la hora de mis entrenamientos y a la hora de mis partidos.
OCSC: How did you adapt to moving around teams when playing in your career? How well did you learn from different philosophies of the teams?
Cubo: Yes, I have had a career in which I have passed through important teams, teams in which I have learned a lot, in the cities in which I have been and also the dressing rooms that I have had, the companions that I have had. Cruz Azul, Pumas, and Chivas are teams where I have had teammates with great hierarchy, both foreigners and Mexicans and well, that has made me mature a lot. I have learned a lot from all the teams I have been in Mexico, this being also in the United States and well, it is to adapt as soon as possible. Now in California, Los Angeles, Orange County, all of these are areas that I more or less know, when I was in Chivas USA I also moved around those cities, through Carson and through Long Beach, because in those areas, I knew that I would feel very comfortable there. I know there are a lot of Latino fans, I know there are a lot of Mexicans, there are also a lot of Chivas fans here in the United States, there are Chivas, América, Pumas, everything. But well, when the national team plays in this county, all those teams come together to support. And well, that’s what I was telling you. I have received many messages on my social networks from fans of different teams in Mexico who live there in Irvine or in that area of California welcoming me, and making me feel very comfortable and I think I will feel that way now when i’m in the team, in the city, I’m going to feel very comfortable and I’m sure that’s going to be reflected at the time of my training sessions and at the time of my matches.

OCSC: ¿Cuáles son algunas cosas que usted ha notado sobre jugar en las ligas de fútbol americanas durante su carrera? ¿Cómo vas a compartir tu conocimiento y experiencia con los jóvenes del equipo?
Cubo: Jugar acá en Estados Unidos me he sentido muy cómodo, me he sentido muy libre. Es una liga que me gusta mucho porque es muy competitiva, porque es muy fuerte. Los estadios, la afición también, el ambiente que hay es muy padre, es muy familiar y eso la verdad me gusta bastante cuando me ha tocado jugar en Chivas USA, en Houston, y en Atlanta. Y bueno, me siento muy cómodo. Me gusta que sea una liga competitiva. Cada vez, las ligas y los equipos de Estados Unidos se hacen más fuertes. Y ahora que vengo a la USL, te digo espero lo mismo, espero una similitud a lo que he vivido en la MLS, una liga fuerte, una liga muy física, muy rápida y en la que también te encuentras a muchos jugadores con mucha calidad futbolística, este, que son técnicos, que son desequilibrantes y bueno, eso lo hace muy interesante. Entonces te digo espero que va a ser un torneo muy fuerte, que estoy seguro que si nos apoyamos como el año pasado, Luis lo hizo el equipo y salió campeón. Si este año seguimos por esa base, seguimos por ese camino, estoy seguro que podemos hacer algo histórico, como conseguir dos campeonatos en la USL consecutivos y creo que va a ser muy importante para el club. Vengo con esa mentalidad y bueno, creo que he aprendido bastante y lo voy a tratar de transmitir ahora en este equipo y para el servicio de Orange County. Y en cuanto a mi experiencia en poder transmitirle a mis compañeros a los jóvenes es poniendo el ejemplo, no poniendo el ejemplo día a día, poniendo el ejemplo en los entrenamientos, en las sesiones de gimnasio, en las sesiones de gimnasio, en las horas extra de entrenamiento, cuando se tenga que hacer. Yo creo que hay jugadores con experiencia en el equipo, está Michel Orozco, hay un par de jugadores también que si los grandes ponen ese ejemplo dentro y fuera de la cancha, en los entrenamientos y todo eso, yo creo que los jóvenes van a tratar de imitar lo que hacen los jugadores más grandes y es el mejor ejemplo que se puede poner dentro de la cancha y siendo un profesional.
OCSC: What are some things that you have noticed about playing in the American soccer leagues during your career? How are you going to share your knowledge and experience with the younger guys on the team?
Cubo: Playing here in the United States I have felt very comfortable, I have felt very free. It is a league that I like a lot because it is very competitive, because it is very strong. The stadiums, the fans as well, the atmosphere there is very cool. It’s very familiar and the truth is that I like it a lot when I’ve played in Chivas USA, Houston, and Atlanta. Well, I feel very comfortable. I like that it is a competitive league. Each time, the leagues and teams in the United States are getting stronger. And now that I come to the USL, I tell you I expect the same, I expect a similarity to what I have experienced in the MLS, a strong league, a very physical league, very fast and in which you also find many players with a lot of quality. That they are technical, that they are unbalanced and well, that makes it very interesting. So I tell you, I hope it’s going to be a very strong tournament. I’m sure that if we support each other like last year, Luis made the team and came out champion. If this year we continue on that basis, we continue on that path, I’m sure we can do something historic, like winning two consecutive USL championships and I think it will be very important for the club. I come with that mentality and well, I think I’ve learned a lot and I’m going to try to pass it on now in this team and for the Orange County service. And as for my experience in being able to pass on the young people to my colleagues, it is by setting an example, not setting an example day by day, setting an example in training sessions, in gym sessions, in the extra hours of training, when it has to be done. I think there are players with experience in the team, there is Michel Orozco, there are a couple of players who also think that if the greats set that example on and off the pitch, in training and all that, I think the youngsters will. They are going to try to imitate what the greatest players do and it is the best example that can be set on the court and being a professional.

OCSC: ¿Qué esperas para vivir en Orange County?
Cubo: Bueno, la verdad es que es un condado muy, muy bonito. Todo California es un estado de sueño. Yo creo que California es un lugar ideal. El clima, las actividades, el fútbol, la pasión también que se vive por el fútbol. Hay muchos equipos de fútbol, muchísimas academias, todo eso hace que sea un lugar muy divertido para los amantes del fútbol, del deporte también. Creo que hay muchísimas actividades por hacer. Siento que voy a estar muy muy contento en la ciudad, siento que voy a estar muy contento en el equipo y bueno, espero que esa tranquilidad y esa y el disfrutar fuera de la cancha y estar tan tranquilo y tan disfrutando tanto fuera de la cancha, estoy seguro que eso se va a reflejar a la hora de los partidos.
OCSC: What are you looking forward to living in Orange County?
Cubo: Well, the truth is that it is a very, very nice county. All of California is a dream state. I think California is an ideal place. The climate, the activities, the soccer, the passion that is also lived for soccer. There are many soccer teams, many academies, all of which makes it a very fun place for soccer lovers, as well as sports lovers. I think there are many activities to do. I feel that I am going to be very, very happy in the city, I feel that I am going to be very happy in the team and well, I hope that this tranquility and that and enjoying off the field and being so calm and enjoying so much off the field court, I’m sure that will be reflected at the time of the games.

OCSC: La comida mexicana es muy popular por aquí, como toda la comida hispana. Nos gustaría saber, ¿prefieres salsa verde o salsa roja en tus tacos? ¿Cuál es tu tipo favorito de tacos u otra comida mexicana?
Cubo: Sí, me gusta mucho la salsa roja. Que pique, que pique, que pique bastante. Si es con habanero también me gusta mucho con Chilito. Sí, sí, me gusta mucho la salsa roja. Y fíjate que todavía no me han llevado a comer mexicana en Estados Unidos. No he probado unos tacos que me convenzan al 100 por ciento. Y si saben de un buen lugar, me pasan la recomendación para ir a probarlos. Este no como tacos la mayor parte del tiempo, pero de repente cuando se me antoja sí me gusta ir por unos taquitos. Pero bueno, gracias a Dios también mi esposa me cocina muy bien, tiene el sazón mexicano y me hace allí mi salsita, mi guacamole para que no extrañe tanta la comida mexicana. Pero bueno, todo lo que son los chilaquiles, los huevos con pico de gallo, estas tortas ahogadas que son de Guadalajara, todo eso me gusta y si se da una oportunidad de probarlo por ahí cerca del estadio de Orange County. Pues adelante lo probaré.
OCSC: Mexican food is very popular around here, like all Hispanic food. We would like to know, whether you prefer salsa verde or salsa roja in your tacos? What is your favorite type of tacos or other Mexican food?
Cubo: Yes, I really like the red sauce. The one where it stings, it stings a lot. If it is with habanero, I also like it very much with Chilito. Yes, yes, I really like the red sauce. And notice that they still haven’t taken me to get Mexican food in the United States. I have not tried some tacos that convince me 100 percent. And yes, if and when you have a good place, then pass me the recommendation to go try them. I don’t eat a lot of tacos the majority of the time, but suddenly when I feel like it, I like to go for some taquitos. OCSC: Ya mencionaste el hecho de que gente de la comunidad hispana aquí se acercó a ti para ofrecerte apoyo. ¿Qué quieres decirles a ellos y al resto de los fans mientras te preparas para la temporada en la que todos esperamos ver la celebración de tu baile robot?
Cubo: Si me estoy preparando, la verdad me estoy preparando también mentalmente mucho, porque es un compromiso muy grande. Creo que este año tanto la directiva, el cuerpo técnico y mis compañeros esperamos poder volver a hacerlo. Entonces es un compromiso doble de grande. Estoy tratando de prepararme también mentalmente para eso. No sé qué se puede lograr y espero que todo el equipo pueda darle a todos los fanáticos del condado de Orange una alegría tan hermosa nuevamente. Y voy a trabajar muy duro, espero. Te digo, no soy, no soy muy bueno para bailar, no soy muy bueno para hacer el baile del robot, pero yo lo intento y como salga está bien. El chiste es festejar goles y espero que pueda hacerlo en muchas ocasiones. Y te digo, estoy muy emocionado por todos los aficionados latinos, a la comunidad hispana, que vayan al estadio en general, a todos los aficionados de Orange County. La verdad que muchas gracias por el recibimiento que me han dado y me han mandado muchísimos mensajes de apoyo. OCSC: You already touched on the fact that people from the Hispanic community here reached out to you to offer support. What do you want to say to them and the rest of the fans as you prepare for the season where we all hope to see your robot dance celebration?
Cubo: I am preparing myself, the truth is that I am also preparing myself a lot mentally, because it is a very big commitment. I think that this year both the board, the coaching staff and my teammates hope to be able to do it again. So it’s twice as big a commitment. I’m trying to prepare myself mentally for that as well.
